The verse melody to Australian Punk-Pop band 5 Seconds of Summer's hit Don't Stop (release date: June 16, 2014) is similar to the verse melody to folk-rock hero Barry McGuire's 1965 anti-war anthem Eve of Destruction (written by P.F. Sloan). The chord structure/arrangement of 5SOS's verse is also similar to Miley Cyrus' Wake Up America, and the pre-chorus/chorus resembles Neon Tree's Everybody Talks.

Don't Stop (:07) VS Eve of Destruction (:13)

The 2-5-1 progression is ubiquitous and serves many melodies but the opening 3 bars of Ochs's Changes (which certainly predates Arthur's Theme) seems the apparent progenitor of the Moon Song, also in its sentimental wistfulness (though not much in evidence in the Ochs rendition offered here). Karen O's melody, though sparer and more delicate, owes unmistakable debt to the Ochs.

The bridge melody for American Authors' song Best Day of My Life (released March 19, 2013) bears resemblance to verse melody for The Beach Boys' classic In My Room (released October 28, 1963). While recorded in different keys (BDoML: D major; IMR: B major), vocal melodies for both songs share a similar rhythm (BDoML: one-two-and-three-four; IMR: one-two-three-four), and pitch contour (expressed in relative scale degrees, BDoML's diatonic melody: 1-1-1-2-1-3-3-3-4-3-5-5-5-6-5-3-2-1; IMR's diatonic melody: 1-1-2-1-3-3-4-3-5-5-6-4-5), as well as vocal harmonies. BDoML's production is also reminiscent of Imagine Dragons' It's Time (tempo, vocal effect, banjo and handclaps), and The Lumineers' Hey Ho. Best Day of My Life (2:06) VS In My Room (:35).

So Far Away (released February 10, 1971) appears on legendary singer-songwriter Carole King's seminal blockbuster Tapestry (over 25 million albums sold, four Grammys, and most consecutive weeks at No. 1 for a female solo artist on Billboard's 200 Chart). Invisible (released January 26, 2014) is the lead single from country artist Hunter Hayes' sophomore effort, which he debuted live at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. The choruses for Invisible (key: C#) and So Far Away (key: D) share a similar chord progression (Invisible: I-IV-ii-IV-V; SFA: I-IV-ii-IV/V) and both melodies emphasize the second step of the root scale and move mostly between the tonic, second and third degrees. The rhythm of the chorus melody (i.e. vocal line) is also similar: "Far A-way" and "Trust The One" (long notes followed by two short ones). [Thanks to Steve Cohen for suggesting this one!]. So Far Away (:13) VS Invisible (:55).

Additional notes/observations:

Written for the film The Bucket List, John Mayer's song Say (released November 20, 2007) bears mild resemblance to Steve Winwood's number one Adult Contemporary hit Back in the High Life Again (released June 1986). Similarities include: Say's ukulele part played at the opening and throughout, which sets the tone for the song in much the same way as BitHLA's mandolin part, tempo (168 bpm vs 169 bpm) drums (both songs feature a staggered beat with a military/march snare pattern). Likewise, the chords for Say (key: Bb) follow a I-IV-vi-V (or 1 - 4 - minor 6 - 5) progression, while BitHLA's (key: D) chords follow a I-IV-I-V (or 1 - 4 - 1 - 5) progression. Have a listen: Say (1:08) vs BitHLA (1:26).

Additional notes/observations:

Train's country/folk-pop duet Bruises featuring Ashley Monroe (released November 9, 2012) bears resemblance to both Madonna's Crazy for You (released March 1985) and John Denver's 1966 composition Leaving On A Jet Plane. Verses for both Bruises (key: D major) and Crazy for You (key: E major) share a I-IV-V (or major 1-4-5) chord progression (though a whole step apart), and verse melodies for both songs hew to a similar major pentatonic scale (compare CFY's line "Two-by-two their bodies become one" with B's line "Haven't seen you since high school"). Likewise, the chorus melody for Bruises and verse melody for Denver's Leaving On A Jet Place (key: G major) follow a similar fifth to major third movement in the root scale (LOAJP's line "So kiss me and smile for me [...] and B's "These bruises make for better conversation [...]"). Check out Crazy for You (:27) and Bruises (:10).

Additional notes/observations:

In 1977, the Starland Vocal Band won a Grammy Award for "Best Arrangement for Voices" for its sexually-suggestive number-one single Afternoon Delight (released April 1976). SVB hailed from Washington, D.C. That same year, singer-songwriter Jason Mraz was born in nearby Virginia. Coincidence? The bridge to Mraz's love song I Won't Give Up (released January 3, 2012) features the same chord progression (2-5 or F#min7->Bmaj for IWGU, and Gmin7->Cmaj for AD), vocal melody, and harmony as the pre-chorus to Afternoon Delight. Compare IWGU (around 2:16) starting with the lines "I don't wanna be someone who walks away so easily, I'm here to stay and make the difference I can make", to AD (around :27) with the line "When everything's a little clearer in the light of day." Hard not to picture Ron Burgundy's news team singing it!
